Political Shifts in Mississauga: Peter McCallion Withdraws from Mayoral Race

In the dynamic arena of Mississauga politics, recent developments have reshaped the upcoming mayoral byelection landscape. Within a span of less than 24 hours, there was a significant entry and exit among the candidates.

Peter McCallion, son of the legendary former Mayor Hazel McCallion, known affectionately as “Hurricane Hazel,” has unexpectedly withdrawn from the mayoral race. His decision comes shortly after his unsuccessful bid for the Ward 9 council seat in the 2022 municipal election, where he was defeated by Martin Reid.

The McCallion family has been a prominent force in Mississauga’s political scene for decades. Hazel McCallion, who passed away in January 2023 just before her 102nd birthday, served as the city’s mayor from 1978 until her retirement in 2014. She was succeeded by Bonnie Crombie, who served until January 2023 before leaving to lead the Ontario Liberal Party.

Adding to the election drama, Brian Crombie, the ex-husband of the most recent former Mayor Bonnie Crombie, has now entered the race to succeed her. This development came on the heels of Peter McCallion’s withdrawal, further intensifying the electoral contest.

With nominations closing soon, the candidate count stands at 21, reflecting an unprecedented level of interest in the mayoral position. The city is gearing up for a six-week campaign period leading up to the election on June 10, where residents will also choose a new Ward 5 councillor—a seat vacated by Carolyn Parrish who is now vying for the mayoral role.

Notable current city councillors, including Stephen Dasko (Ward 1), Alvin Tedjo (Ward 2), and Dipika Damerla (Ward 7), are among those competing to fill Crombie’s shoes, signaling a highly competitive race ahead.
