Peel Regional Police have issued over 20,000 traffic charges in the first half of 2024 as part of a crackdown on street racing and car rallies in Mississauga and Brampton. Acting Inspector Shawn Rice reported to Brampton City Council that these charges include 4,200 for speeding, 1,300 for noisy mufflers, 400 for careless driving, and 900 for stunting and street racing.
The surge in car rallies has followed Vaughan’s new bylaws increasing penalties for such events. In response, Brampton is considering similar measures to enhance public safety. Between May 29 and June 24, officers attended 21 car rallies in Brampton.
Recent operations like “Project Offramp” and “Project ERASE” have seen Peel police collaborating with Toronto, Halton, Hamilton, and York law enforcement to target street racing and stunt driving. Stunt driving charges in Ontario apply for excessive speeding, with severe penalties for violators.
