The City of Mississauga has officially declared pickleball the sport of the summer. Municipal representatives have endorsed this low-impact, engaging activity, highlighting its benefits for physical and mental well-being. Ideal for families and individuals of all ages, pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity across the city.
“Pickleball’s popularity in Mississauga continues to grow and we’re excited about the opportunities it brings. The sport has captured the hearts of our community and as a city, we’re committed to supporting the growth of the sport,” said Kristina Zietsma, Director of Recreation and Culture for Mississauga, in an official statement.
City officials note that pickleball offers an accessible entry point for beginners to learn racket-based sports without the intensity of tennis. They describe pickleball as a hybrid of badminton, tennis, and ping pong, played with paddles and a perforated ball. Typically, the game is played by four players on a court similar to a tennis court, complete with a raised net.
For residents eager to join the fun, Mississauga boasts 84 active pickleball courts, located in both outdoor areas and community centres. The city believes that pickleball has the potential to foster community spirit, promote physical activity, and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
“We recognize that pickleball has the potential to bring people together, promote physical activity, and enhance the quality of life for Mississauga residents,” Zietsma reiterated.
To ensure a pleasant experience for all, the city urges residents to follow proper etiquette when using the courts. If courts are full, players should:
- Place paddles in the slots provided to hold their group’s spot.
- Limit play to one game to 11 points.
- Call “court” when a game has reached 11 points.
Mississauga is excited to see the continued growth and enjoyment of pickleball throughout the community.
