The Ontario government is enhancing safety and customer support in the towing industry with new regulations effective July 1, 2024. Ontario will be the first Canadian province to mandate certification for both tow truck drivers and vehicle storage operators, safeguarding drivers from deceptive towing companies.
“While most of Ontario’s towing industry operates in good faith, some bad actors have taken advantage of drivers for too long,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Our government is committed to leveling the playing field, ensuring people feel secure when they need roadside assistance.”
Key protections include allowing consumers to choose their towing company (unless directed by police) and request proof of certification from drivers. Additionally, tow truck drivers must disclose maximum fees and transport vehicles via the most direct route.
To obtain or maintain a towing certificate, drivers must complete mandatory training and pass a criminal record check. Non-compliance will result in fines, potential vehicle impoundment, and possible revocation of future certification.
