Minister Kamal Khera Highlights Contributions of Canadians with Disabilities at Community Celebration

Last night, the Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities, joined community members to celebrate the invaluable contributions of Canadians with disabilities and the incredible organizations that advocate for and support them every day.

During the event, Minister Khera emphasized the importance of collective action in creating a more inclusive Canada. “Canadians with disabilities contribute significantly to our communities, workplaces, and society as a whole. It’s our responsibility to ensure they have the opportunities and support they deserve to thrive. Together, we can build a more inclusive, barrier-free Canada for all,” said Minister Khera.

The event, held on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and the work ahead. Minister Khera highlighted the government’s efforts, including the implementation of the Accessible Canada Act and the ongoing development of the Canada Disability Benefit, aimed at lifting persons with disabilities out of poverty.

“While much remains to be done, I am inspired by the commitment of advocates, organizations, and Canadians to drive meaningful change. Accessibility is not just a legal requirement; it’s a fundamental human right,” Minister Khera added.

Community leaders and advocates also shared their perspectives. Sarah Thompson, Executive Director of Disability Advocates Canada, remarked, “Events like this remind us of the power of collaboration. When we come together, we can break down barriers and foster inclusion.”

The evening concluded with a call to action from Minister Khera: “I urge all Canadians to reflect on how we can create environments where every individual feels valued and included. Let’s work together to remove barriers and ensure equality for everyone.”

The Government of Canada remains committed to advancing disability inclusion, ensuring that no Canadian is left behind. For more information on Canada’s accessibility initiatives, visit canada.ca/accessibility.
