Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre, has officially endorsed Mark Carney for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, expressing confidence in Carney’s ability to guide the nation through current and future challenges.
Mark Carney, 59, is a distinguished economist with a notable career, having served as the Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. His tenure at these institutions was marked by adept navigation through significant economic events, including the 2008 financial crisis and the complexities of Brexit. More recently, Carney has been involved in climate finance, serving as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance.

Following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement, Carney has emerged as a leading contender for the Liberal Party leadership. He has expressed a strong interest in the position, emphasizing the need for robust economic leadership to address issues such as stagnant wages and rising housing costs.
Carney’s potential candidacy has garnered support from several Liberal MPs, including:
- George Chahal
- Sophie Chatel
- Francesco Sorbara
- Patrick Weiler
- Salma Zahid
- Sameer Zuberi
Their endorsements reflect a growing momentum within the party for Carney’s leadership bid.
However, Carney faces competition from other prominent figures, notably former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who has also received endorsements from several MPs. The leadership race is expected to be closely contested, with the Liberal Party scheduled to select a new leader on March 9.
While Carney’s extensive experience in global finance is widely recognized, some critics question his ability to connect with the broader electorate, given his limited experience in retail politics. Additionally, his previous alignment with certain policies of the Trudeau administration may pose challenges in differentiating his platform during the leadership campaign.
As the leadership race progresses, it is anticipated that more MPs and party members will declare their support for their preferred candidates, shaping the future direction of the Liberal Party and its leadership.
