Mark Carney Announces Major Public Safety Plan in Brampton to Tackle Crime, Protect Families, and Support Law Enforcement

Liberal Leader Mark Carney visited Brampton yesterday to unveil a bold and comprehensive plan to combat organized crime, human trafficking, and cross-border gun and drug smuggling—while increasing support for victims and empowering law enforcement agencies across Canada.

Joined by Brampton Liberal MPs and community leaders, Carney announced that a re-elected Liberal government will strengthen the justice system, invest in law enforcement, and introduce new legislation to protect families, children, and places of worship.

“Families across Canada—especially here in Peel Region—are worried about car thefts, gun violence, and online exploitation,” said Carney. “A Liberal government will not only be tough on crime, but smart about how we prevent it and support victims. Today’s announcement is about restoring safety and trust in our communities.”

Key components of the plan include:

  • Tougher Criminal Code provisions and stricter bail laws for repeat offenders in violent and organized crimes, including car theft and home invasions.
  • Hiring of 1,000 new RCMP officers to target drug trafficking, cybercrime, foreign interference, and gang activity.
  • Recruitment and training of 1,000 new CBSA officers to intercept fentanyl, illegal guns, and stolen vehicles at the border.
  • Designating hate-motivated murders including femicide as first-degree murder, and criminalizing non-consensual distribution of intimate images and sexual deepfakes.
  • New legislation to combat online child exploitation and sextortion.
  • New protections for places of worship, schools, and community centres, making it a crime to intentionally obstruct access or threaten attendees.
  • Increased mental health supports for first responders including paramedics, firefighters, border agents, and search and rescue teams.

The announcement was widely welcomed by Brampton’s Liberal MPs and candidates, who underscored the need for community-based safety policies.

“This plan directly responds to what we’ve been hearing from families on the ground,” said Sonia Sidhu, MP for Brampton South. “From gun violence to auto theft, our residents want real action. These investments and reforms will make our streets safer and protect the most vulnerable among us.”

“Public safety isn’t a partisan issue—it’s about doing what’s right for our communities,” added Ruby Sahota, MP for Brampton North. “We’ve seen too many families impacted by organized crime and cross-border trafficking. This announcement shows we’re serious about confronting those threats head-on.”

“As Minister of Health and MP for Brampton West, I know that safety and mental health go hand-in-hand,” said Kamal Khera, MP and Minister of Health. “Investing in the well-being of our first responders and survivors of violence is essential, and this plan gets it right.”

“This announcement shows our commitment to families in Brampton and across Canada,” said Maninder Sidhu, MP for Brampton East. “From protecting our children online to tackling car theft and human trafficking, this is the leadership we need to build safer communities.”

“I hear every day from residents who are concerned about crime and community safety,” said Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton Centre. “These measures will restore trust, support our police, and make sure the justice system protects those who need it most.”

“I hear from residents every day who are frustrated by the rise in auto thefts, violence, and online exploitation,” said Amandeep Sodhi, Liberal candidate for Brampton Centre. “Mark Carney’s plan is comprehensive and community-focused. It empowers law enforcement, protects women and children, and gives Brampton the resources we need to stay safe.”

Carney emphasized that the Liberal plan balances firm justice with compassionate support, and promised continued collaboration with provinces, municipalities, and local organizations.

“We must protect our children, stand up for victims, and give law enforcement the tools they need to keep Canadians safe,” Carney said. “This is about building stronger, safer communities—starting right here in Brampton.”
