Indian Prime Minister Condemns Brampton Temple Attack, Demands Justice

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the violent clashes that erupted on Sunday at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, calling it a “cowardly attempt” to intimidate. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Modi urged the Canadian government to protect those facing threats and uphold the rule of law.

“I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada,” Modi declared. “Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law.”

The violence unfolded at the temple on The Gore Road, with videos shared online capturing chaotic scenes of physical altercations. Opposing groups wielded sticks as tensions flared, reportedly due to the presence of Indian diplomats at the temple. The footage shows banners and flags supporting the Khalistan movement, which advocates for a separate Sikh state in India.

The unrest at the Brampton temple was followed by additional protests in the Malton area of Mississauga. Peel Regional Police confirmed three arrests in connection with the altercations and maintained a heavy police presence to ensure public safety.

In their statement, Peel police emphasized their duty to uphold public order while respecting the right to peaceful protest, as guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also denounced the violence, affirming the rights of all Canadians to practice their faith safely. “The acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable,” Trudeau said. “Every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely.”

The tensions surrounding the Khalistan issue have been a source of division between Sikh and Hindu communities, with similar confrontations reported in British Columbia. The conflict has also strained Canada-India relations, especially after Trudeau’s recent allegations linking the Indian government to acts of violence against Sikh activists in Canada—claims strongly denied by Modi’s administration.

As the situation remains tense, both governments are facing increased scrutiny to manage these disputes and ensure the safety and rights of all involved.
