Hamilton Police Dismantle ‘Open-Air Drug Market,’ Arrest 57 and Restore Community Safety

A large-scale “open-air drug market” operating in the East Avenue North and King Street East area of Hamilton has been dismantled following a five-week operation by Hamilton Police. The initiative resulted in 57 arrests, 103 charges, and the seizure of significant quantities of drugs, cash, and other items linked to the illegal operation.

The sophisticated drug operation ran like a business, employing roles such as lookouts, runners, and traffickers, with participants carrying small amounts of drugs to avoid lengthy custody. Police seized 45 grams of crack cocaine, 116 grams of cannabis, 81 grams of methamphetamine, 118 grams of fentanyl, and over $12,000 in coins—highlighting the extensive reach of the operation.

Impact on the Community
The illicit market exploited vulnerable individuals and fueled a cycle of addiction, with many people panhandling and using collected money to purchase drugs. The operation was located near a park and across the street from an elementary school, further emphasizing the urgency of police action.

“These markets impact surrounding communities, fostering feelings of insecurity, increasing crime, and deterring residents and businesses from fully engaging in the area,” said Hamilton Police Inspector Jim Callender. “Our goal is to restore safety and rebuild trust in the affected neighbourhoods.”

Community Collaboration and Safety Enhancements
In collaboration with the City of Hamilton, police addressed environmental factors that supported the drug market’s operation. This included removing and replacing fencing, installing improved lighting for visibility, and other infrastructure changes to make the area less conducive to criminal activity.

Ongoing Investigation
Among those charged, police named Vincent Asanti, who faces cocaine trafficking and proceeds over $5,000 charges. Law enforcement seized $51,351.90 from Asanti’s residence and vehicle.

Hamilton Police emphasized their commitment to combatting drug trafficking and urged the community to report any information that could assist ongoing investigations.
