From Harmony to Hardline: Border Library Caught in U.S.-Canada Chill

The black tape marking the U.S.-Canada border inside the Haskell Free Library and Opera House has never felt so divisive. U.S. authorities’ sudden decision to seal off Canadian entry has cast a shadow over the beloved landmark, just as diplomatic ties between the neighbors fray. The move follows a January visit by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who crossed the tape into Canada, quipping repeatedly that it’s the “51st state”—a jab that left library staff stunned.

“She showed no respect for our closest ally,” library executive director Deborah Bishop told CTV News earlier this month, recalling Noem’s remarks. Now, with Canadian access cut off, the town fears the library’s unique role as a bridge between nations is crumbling. Stanstead officials promise a fight, with local leaders set to speak out Friday against the closure’s toll on history and community.
