MISSISSAUGA — E-scooter riders in Mississauga can grab a free helmet this Friday as part of a Canada-wide safety campaign aimed at promoting helmet use and responsible riding habits.
The giveaway will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the City Centre Transit Terminal near Square One Shopping Centre, hosted by Lime Canada, one of Mississauga’s e-scooter and e-bike rental partners.
The event is part of Lime’s new “Helmet Selfie” campaign, which encourages riders to make safety a priority. Those who submit a photo wearing a helmet while riding a Lime e-scooter will receive a 50% discount on their next trip. The initiative, which spans several Canadian cities including Vaughan, Ajax, Edmonton, Vancouver, Port Moody, Coquitlam, New Westminster, Richmond, and Kelowna, aims to make helmet use both fun and rewarding.
“Safety is always front of mind for Lime, and we want it to be front of mind for riders too,” said Clare Laverty, Lime Canada’s community engagement leader. “This campaign turns a safety measure into a fun, rewarding experience — ride safe and save money on your next trip.”
The company says the program reinforces its commitment to fostering a culture of safe, courteous, and rule-abiding riding across Canada.
Program Review and Local Concerns
Mississauga’s e-scooter and e-bike rental program, now completing its second summer, will soon undergo another city review. The initiative, which deploys about 900 e-scooters and 300 e-bikes, has faced ongoing scrutiny from residents and councillors over safety and parking issues.
Coun. and Deputy Mayor Matt Mahoney has been a vocal critic of the program, recently calling for a ban on e-scooters, citing safety risks to children and pedestrians. “These things scare the hell out of me … I hate these scooters and I want them banned,” he said during a recent committee meeting.
Mayor Carolyn Parrish previously expressed concerns after the program’s first year, suggesting it might be scrapped entirely due to parking and clutter problems. However, city staff and partners — Lime and Bird Canada — worked to improve operations for the 2025 season, including better parking enforcement and rider education.
E-bikes remain available year-round, while e-scooters are removed during winter months. The upcoming review will assess whether the city’s electric mobility program has achieved its intended goals of providing safe, sustainable, and accessible transportation options for residents.
