Former Kennedy Stewart says a current British Columbia cabinet minister is allegedly under investigation for collaborating with the Chinese government, claims that have intensified concerns surrounding foreign interference in Canadian politics.
Speaking during an interview on the CKNW Jas Johal Show, Stewart said federal lawyers interviewed him regarding the matter and claimed senior officials within the provincial government, including Premier David Eby, are aware of the alleged investigation.
Stewart did not identify the cabinet minister involved and provided no public evidence supporting the allegation. He said he informed senior government officials after confirming the identity of the individual during discussions with federal authorities.
“I made sure it got to the top of the chain,” Stewart said during the interview, adding that he believes no meaningful action has followed.
The former mayor described foreign interference by China as a growing issue in Canadian politics at both the municipal and provincial levels.
“Chinese interference in Canadian politics has become a serious problem both at the civic level, and now at the provincial government level,” Stewart said.
The Government of British Columbia had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication, while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said it was reviewing media requests related to the matter.
Stewart also claimed he risked consequences by speaking publicly because he had signed a non-disclosure agreement connected to the issue, though he did not specify with whom the agreement was made.
The allegations come amid heightened national scrutiny over foreign interference in Canadian democratic institutions, particularly following recent federal inquiries and intelligence reports involving alleged attempts by foreign states to influence elections and political decision-making.
No charges have been announced, and no official confirmation of an active investigation involving a B.C. cabinet minister has been publicly released by law enforcement or federal authorities.
