In a landmark move to address housing affordability and homelessness, the Federal Government has announced a $30 million investment in the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI). The inauguration of this initiative was celebrated today at The Birch Place Brampton Housing Project, with the event being graced by Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre, and Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton. Ruby Sahota, Member of Parliament for Brampton North, also highlighted the importance of this investment for the community.
“Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. Today’s funding through the Rapid Housing Initiative will go a long way in providing stability and security to many families in Brampton,” said Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton Centre.
Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, added, “This project is a testament to what can be achieved when different levels of government work together. It will not only provide homes but also foster a sense of community and support for our most vulnerable residents.”
Ruby Sahota, MP for Brampton North, emphasized, “Federal initiatives like the Rapid Housing Initiative are crucial for fostering collaboration among municipalities to find innovative solutions for faster and more affordable housing. This investment is significant for Brampton residents, and hundreds of middle-class families will benefit from it. We are committed to making life more affordable for Canadians, and that begins with innovative housing solutions like this one.”
This latest funding will contribute to the creation of additional affordable housing units in Brampton, complementing previous investments that have already made a significant impact in the region. The RHI has been instrumental in creating thousands of affordable homes across Canada, underscoring the government’s commitment to ending chronic homelessness and building stronger, more resilient communities.
The Birch Place project, which involved converting a two-storey commercial hotel into affordable housing, now offers 67 units, including 50 rental units and 17 transitional housing units for youth aged 16 to 24. This project is strategically located near essential amenities, services, and employment opportunities, contributing significantly to Brampton’s housing needs.
