Elon Musk’s X to Cover Legal Expenses for Canadian Doctor from Brampton, Ontario Over Tweet
Elon Musk’s X has announced its commitment to covering the legal fees for a Canadian doctor who faced scrutiny from regulators for her COVID-19-related tweets.
In a statement posted on the X News account on Sunday morning, the platform, formerly known as Twitter, expressed its support for the Brampton-based doctor against what it describes as “government-supported efforts to silence her.”
In 2021, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario issued a warning to the doctor, a pediatric specialist based in Brampton, Ontario, regarding her tweets, including one suggesting that COVID-19 vaccination was unnecessary. The doctor has been running a crowdfunding campaign seeking $300,000 to cover legal expenses, including costs related to a lawsuit she filed against what she termed a “malicious online smear campaign.”
In response to the plea for assistance, Musk pledged to cover the remaining amount of her crowdfunding campaign and support her appeal against the cautions issued by the College in 2021.
Last August, Musk announced on X his commitment to funding the legal expenses of individuals who faced unfair treatment by their employers due to their posts or interactions on the platform.
Since acquiring Twitter for US$44 billion and rebranding it as X, Musk has implemented significant changes, including dismantling its verification system and reducing the workforce, including engineers and moderators.
Concerns have been raised by experts regarding the spread of misinformation on X, including topics such as the Israel-Hamas conflict.
