Dr. Hamidah Meghani Appointed Peel Region’s New Medical Officer of Health

New Top Doctor for Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon Brings COVID Leadership Experience

Peel Region has announced the appointment of Dr. Hamidah Meghani as the new Medical Officer of Health (MOH), effective February 18, 2025. In her new role, Dr. Meghani will lead Peel Public Health, overseeing health initiatives for nearly two million residents across Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon.

Dr. Meghani brings a wealth of experience to Peel Region. She most recently served as Deputy Chief, Medical and Systems Support at Public Health Ontario, where she advised local public health units and healthcare providers on communicable disease control across the province.

Before that, Dr. Meghani spent nearly a decade as Commissioner and Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region. There, she successfully managed the region’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic for communities in Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills.

Her extensive career also includes roles as Associate Medical Officer of Health for Hamilton Public Health Services and as a part-time faculty member at the University of Toronto and McMaster University.

Dr. Meghani holds a Doctor of Medicine from McMaster University, a Master of Public Health from Columbia University, and a Master of Management from McGill University’s International Masters for Health Leadership Program.

In her new role, Dr. Meghani will oversee public health programs aimed at improving community well-being, reducing disease and mortality rates, and addressing health inequities among different population groups.

Dr. Meghani succeeds Dr. Gayane Hovhannisyan, who had been serving as Acting Medical Officer of Health following the resignation of Dr. Lawrence Loh.

With her extensive experience and dedication to public health, Dr. Meghani is poised to lead Peel Public Health in addressing the health challenges and opportunities of one of Canada’s most dynamic and diverse regions.
