Sunfed Produce, LLC has announced a recall of cucumbers sold in Ontario and other Canadian provinces due to potential salmonella contamination, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed today.
The recall affects whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in either bulk cardboard containers labeled “SunFed” or black plastic crates marked with a sticker reading “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.” These products were distributed in several U.S. states as well as Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
According to the company, the recall was initiated following a notification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linking the cucumbers to cases of salmonellosis reported between October 12 and November 15, 2024.
Risks of Salmonella Contamination
Sunfed Produce emphasized the risks associated with Salmonella, noting that it can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals may include fever, diarrhea (which can be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
CFIA’s Response and Ongoing Investigation
The CFIA has launched a food safety investigation in response to the recall. Sunfed is also actively notifying its direct buyers about the affected products.
“No other products sold by or farms supplying to SunFed are implicated in this recall,” the company stated.
Consumers are advised to check for the affected products and avoid consumption to prevent health risks. For more information, contact the CFIA or Sunfed Produce directly.
