Celebrating National AccessAbility Week 2024: “Time to celebrate progress and recognize the work still needed to create a truly inclusive society” Says Minister Khera

“Forward Together: Accessibility and Inclusion for All”

This week, we join Canadians from coast to coast to celebrate National AccessAbility Week, with the theme “Forward Together: Accessibility and Inclusion for All.” This week highlights the incredible contributions of persons with disabilities and underscores our commitment to fostering a fair, inclusive, and accessible Canada for everyone.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement on this occasion:

“Today, as we mark the beginning of National AccessAbility Week, we celebrate the many contributions of persons with disabilities to our country and renew our commitment to building a fair, inclusive, and accessible Canada for everyone.

Eight million Canadians have a disability that impacts their daily lives. Unfortunately, many face barriers when it comes to pursuing an education, growing their careers, or getting opportunities to succeed. That’s why, almost five years ago, we passed the Accessible Canada Act – a landmark piece of legislation that aims to create a barrier-free Canada by 2040. And we’ve been moving forward with a lot more.”

Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities, emphasized the importance of this week, stating, “National AccessAbility Week is a time to celebrate progress and recognize the work still needed to create a truly inclusive society. We are dedicated to breaking down barriers and ensuring that all Canadians, regardless of their abilities, have the opportunity to contribute and thrive.”

Shafqat Ali MP added, “As we celebrate this week, let us recommit ourselves to the principles of accessibility and inclusion. We must continue to advocate for policies and initiatives that support the full participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life.”

Maninder Sidhu MP highlighted the collective effort required, saying, “Achieving accessibility and inclusion is a shared responsibility. It requires the collaboration of governments, organizations, and individuals. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered.”

National AccessAbility Week reminds us of the progress we have made and the steps we must continue to take to ensure a barrier-free Canada. As we move “Forward Together,” let us strive to build a society that celebrates diversity and inclusivity, providing equal opportunities for all.
