Statistics Canada has announced a significant milestone in the nation’s demographic landscape, with the population surpassing 41 million in the first quarter of 2024. As of April 1, 2024, Canada’s population stood at 41,012,563, reflecting a growth rate of 0.6% over the first three months of the year.
The robust increase of 242,673 individuals was driven by a combination of immigration and the addition of non-permanent residents. During this period, Canada welcomed 121,758 immigrants, continuing its tradition of being a global destination for newcomers. Additionally, the population was bolstered by 131,810 non-permanent residents.
Net emigration accounted for a decrease of 12,613 people, contributing to the overall population dynamics. Statistics Canada noted that a significant portion of the growth in temporary immigration took place before the recent announcement of caps on the number of permits issued to non-permanent residents in 2024.
This demographic milestone underscores Canada’s ongoing commitment to welcoming diverse populations and supporting growth through immigration. The country’s population dynamics reflect its strategic efforts to balance permanent and temporary immigration to foster economic and social development.
