Brampton West Conservative MP Amarjeet Gill says he has firmly rejected efforts by the Liberal Party to persuade him to cross the floor, as the governing party sits just one seat short of a majority.
In a statement posted to social media on Jan. 12, Gill said he had been approached by Liberals in recent weeks but had no intention of switching parties.
“I will always honour the trust my constituents of Brampton West have placed in me,” Gill wrote, adding that he remains committed to representing their priorities in Ottawa.
Gill’s comments follow the recent defections of former Conservative MPs Chris d’Entremont and Michael Ma, whose moves to the Liberals have left Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government one seat shy of a majority. Another Conservative MP, Matt Jeneroux, resigned amid speculation of a possible defection, though he has denied Liberal involvement.
Gill also reaffirmed his support for Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who faces a leadership review later this month.
First elected last year, Gill is the only Conservative MP from Brampton since 2011, breaking a long run of Liberal dominance in the city’s ridings.
