Brampton Marks Emergency Preparedness Week with Call for Community Readiness and Resilience

BRAMPTON, ON — As extreme weather events and unexpected disruptions continue to impact communities, the City of Brampton is urging residents to take simple but critical steps toward preparedness during Emergency Preparedness Week, running from May 3 to 9, 2026.

Led locally by the Brampton Emergency Management Office, the annual awareness campaign brings together all levels of government, first responders and community partners to emphasize the importance of readiness in the face of emergencies. Officials stress that whether it’s a severe storm, flooding, power outage or extreme temperatures, having a plan in place can significantly reduce risk and help families respond with confidence.

The message this year is clear: preparedness begins with awareness. Residents are encouraged to understand the potential risks in their area and take proactive steps to protect themselves and their households. This includes having open conversations with family members about emergency plans, identifying meeting points, and ensuring everyone knows how to stay connected if separated during a crisis.

A key recommendation from the city is the preparation of a 72-hour emergency kit, containing essentials such as water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights and important documents. Officials note that being self-sufficient during the first critical hours of an emergency can make a meaningful difference in ensuring safety and stability.

Beyond individual households, the city is also highlighting the role of businesses and organizations in strengthening overall community resilience. With Business Continuity and Resilience Awareness Week scheduled for May 18 to 22, local workplaces are being encouraged to develop continuity plans that can help minimize disruptions and maintain operations during unforeseen events.

City officials emphasize that preparedness is a shared responsibility, calling on residents to look out for neighbours, particularly vulnerable individuals, and to stay connected within their communities. Building a culture of readiness not only protects individuals but also contributes to a stronger and more resilient Brampton.

Emergency Preparedness Week serves as a timely reminder that preparation is not a one-time effort, but an ongoing commitment. By taking small, practical steps today, residents can help ensure they are ready for whatever challenges tomorrow may bring.
