BAPS Hindu Temple Draws Massive Crowds Since Inauguration in Abu Dhabi

Since its inauguration, Abu Dhabi’s first Hindu temple, BAPS Hindu Temple, has witnessed an overwhelming response, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and gearing up for an influx of attendees during the upcoming festivals.

The temple, crafted from intricately hand-carved stone and marble, opened its doors on February 14, immediately drawing eager crowds. The enthusiasm peaked on March 3, with approximately 65,000 attendees flocking to the venue on its first Sunday open to the public, following its inauguration by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Currently, an average of 30,000 visitors converge at the temple complex every Sunday, with waiting times stretching up to one-and-a-half hours on weekends, according to temple authorities.

Reflecting on the unexpected turnout, a temple spokesman expressed astonishment not only at the sheer numbers but also at the warmth and love radiating from every corner of the venue.

April marks a significant month in the Hindu calendar, with festivities commemorating the Hindu New Year and the spring festival, accompanied by traditional prayers observed across Indian states. The temple is also preparing for the celebrations of Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti later this month, drawing Hindus in large numbers to pay homage to the birth of the revered deities Rama and Hanuman, whose elaborate carvings adorn the BAPS mandir.

The temple’s intricate hand-carved works have garnered international acclaim, attracting visitors from diverse backgrounds. Dina Shah, a Sharjah resident, expressed her awe at the detailed craftsmanship, describing her visit as a profound experience reminiscent of classic temples in India.

Tourists from around the world have also joined the queues, captivated by the temple’s architectural grandeur and serene ambiance. Niels Meyer, an architect from Frankfurt, praised the sculptures and expressed his desire to revisit the temple to soak in its tranquil atmosphere.

To accommodate the surging weekend crowds, Abu Dhabi’s transport authority introduced a new bus service, route 203, ferrying visitors from the city bus station to the temple. Additionally, temple officials have bolstered volunteer numbers and enlisted the support of local police to ensure a seamless and safe experience for all visitors, particularly during festivals.

The BAPS Hindu Temple stands as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to cultural diversity and inclusivity, welcoming individuals of all faiths to experience its splendor from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 am to 8 pm.
