Akshay Bhatia Maintains Commanding Lead in Blustery Texas Open

Akshay Bhatia faced a turbulent start on Friday at the Valero Texas Open but managed to steady himself with late birdies, carding a 2-under 70 to extend his lead to five strokes and fuel hopes of securing the final spot in next week’s Masters.

Beginning the day with a three-shot advantage, Bhatia’s early birdie putt hinted at another smooth round. However, challenges ensued as he encountered setbacks like bogeys from bunkers and long-range three-putts. Despite briefly relinquishing his lead, the 22-year-old regained his composure with crucial birdies on the front nine’s par 5s and the par-3 eighth, ultimately expanding his lead amidst blustery conditions and fluctuating challengers.

Bhatia concluded the day at 11-under 133, while Denny McCarthy, who made a late bogey on the par-5 18th, settled at 6-under 138 alongside Brendon Todd and Russell Henley. Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., led the Canadian contingent at 3-under 141.

Reflecting on his performance, Bhatia acknowledged the day’s challenges but expressed satisfaction with his under-par round, emphasizing his strong iron play and putting.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy maintained his steady form with a 70, staying within contention at 139. McIlroy, eyeing a career Grand Slam at Augusta National next week, remained focused on grinding through tricky conditions and minimizing mistakes.

With the Masters berth at stake, Bhatia aims to capitalize on his lead, having previously missed out on the opportunity despite winning the Barracuda Championship last summer.

As the tournament progresses, contenders like Tommy Fleetwood, Webb Simpson, and Monday qualifier Peter Kuest vie for a chance to secure their spots in the Masters field alongside Bhatia.

Notably, past Masters champion Jordan Spieth surged with a 68 to make the cut and position himself within striking distance of the leader.

In the Canadian contingent, Ben Silverman led the charge at 1-under 143, followed closely by Adam Svensson and Roger Sloan. While challenges lie ahead, the competitors remain determined to make their mark in the Texas Open.
