$120 Million Waterfront Pier Moves Closer to Becoming Mississauga’s New Landmark Destination

Plans to build a spectacular $120 million waterfront pier in Mississauga have taken a major step forward after government and development partners finalized a funding agreement that will transform the city’s former industrial shoreline into one of Ontario’s most significant tourism and recreation destinations.

The ambitious project will see the City of Mississauga contribute $30 million toward the construction of the new pier, with Lakeview Community Partners Limited matching that investment. The Ontario government has committed approximately $55 million, while Peel Region will provide the remaining $5 million, bringing the long-awaited funding plan to completion.

The agreement follows several months of discussions and debate regarding Peel Region’s financial contribution. An earlier proposal called for each of the four partners to contribute $30 million, but concerns were raised over the regional municipality’s share of the project. After extensive negotiations, a revised funding model was approved that significantly reduced Peel Region’s contribution, with the provincial government stepping in to cover the balance.

The revitalized pier will form the centrepiece of the massive Lakeview Village redevelopment, a 177-acre mixed-use waterfront community being created on the former Lakeview Generating Station site in southeast Mississauga. Once home to one of Ontario’s largest coal-fired power plants, the area is being transformed into a vibrant residential, commercial, recreational, and cultural destination along the shores of Lake Ontario.

Extending approximately 600 metres into Lake Ontario, the new pier is expected to become the longest public pier on the Canadian Great Lakes. When completed, it will offer panoramic waterfront views while creating an attractive gathering place for residents and visitors throughout the year.

Plans for the destination include public gathering spaces, waterfront promenades, areas for festivals and community events, food vendors, art installations, recreational amenities, and access to water-based activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and marina facilities. The project is designed to complement the recently opened Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area, creating a continuous and accessible waterfront experience that reconnects people with Lake Ontario.

One of the major advantages of the redevelopment is that much of the original concrete structure built to accommodate ships delivering coal to the former generating station remains intact. The existing foundation significantly reduces construction costs while preserving an important piece of the site’s industrial heritage.

For decades, the pier remained inaccessible to the public as part of the power generation facility. Its transformation into a public destination represents one of the most significant waterfront revitalization projects ever undertaken in Mississauga, converting a former industrial landmark into a vibrant civic attraction.

Project planners envision the pier becoming an iconic destination that celebrates local culture, recreation, and community life while attracting visitors from across Ontario and beyond. Combined with the broader Lakeview Village development, the waterfront attraction is expected to generate economic activity, boost tourism, and further establish Mississauga as one of the region’s premier lakefront destinations.

With funding now secured, the project moves significantly closer to construction, bringing the vision of a world-class waterfront landmark one step nearer to becoming a reality for future generations of residents and visitors.
