Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown Highlights Growth, Infrastructure, and Trade Concerns in 2025 State of the City Address

City’s Economic Expansion, Population Boom, and U.S. Tariff Threats Take Center Stage

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown delivered his 2025 State of the City address at the Pearson Convention Centre on February 4, highlighting the city’s rapid population growth, economic expansion, and major infrastructure projects. While expressing optimism about Brampton’s future, Brown also acknowledged the looming threat of U.S. tariffs, emphasizing the need for a united response from all levels of government.

Brampton has now surpassed Mississauga to become Ontario’s third-largest city, with a population nearing 800,000 residents. Brown underscored the city’s record-breaking growth, noting that Brampton is adding 45,000 new residents each year—125 people per day.

“This is the fastest-growing city in Canada,” Brown stated before a packed audience of 400 business and community leaders. “People are choosing Brampton as their destination for housing, employment, and opportunity.”

The State of the City address, hosted by the Brampton Board of Trade, heavily focused on economic development. Brown highlighted key statistics from the city’s economic development office, revealing that in 2024, Brampton added:

  • 2.4 million square feet of new industrial, commercial, and office space, a 30% increase over 2023.
  • Significant investments in manufacturing, logistics, and innovation sectors.

“Every year, our economy continues to grow,” Brown said. “The message today is clear: think big, because Brampton is reaching its full potential.”

Brown provided updates on several long-awaited infrastructure projects:

  • Heritage Heights Development – Provincial approvals for this new 134,000-resident mixed-use community are nearly complete.
  • Brampton’s Second Full-Service Hospital – The project is set to break ground on March 28, 2025, after delays since its 2021 announcement by Premier Doug Ford.
  • Riverwalk Flood Mitigation Project – Funding is now secured, with completion expected by 2028. This project is vital for unlocking new development zones in Brampton.
  • Hazel McCallion LRT Extension – The Ontario government has fully committed to funding a tunneled LRT extension into downtown Brampton, at a cost of $2.8 billion.

A major concern for Brampton businesses is the potential U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, following President Donald Trump’s recent 30-day pause on new tariffs. Brown emphasized the need for a national and local response.

“Brampton is a city of producers. We manufacture everything—from cars to batteries, from groceries to essential products. If tariffs are imposed, we must stand together at every level of government to protect our industries,” he said.

Brown concluded his speech by reaffirming Brampton’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and economic leadership, promising continued investment in infrastructure, transit, and quality of life improvements.

With Brampton’s unprecedented growth, the city is positioning itself as a national economic powerhouse—but challenges, including infrastructure demands and international trade tensions, will require strategic planning and collaboration.
