Whitby Library Vandalized with Swastikas in Antisemitic Attack, Mayor Responds

An act of antisemitic vandalism at the Whitby Central Library has left the community reeling, with Mayor Elizabeth Roy condemning the incident as a “direct attack” on the town’s Jewish community and its core values of inclusion and safety.

The disturbing incident occurred last week when swastikas were found carved into the wall of a washroom at the library. Staff responded swiftly, covering the hateful symbols and notifying police, who attended the scene to investigate.

“Such hateful symbols have no place in our community, especially not in a library, which should be a safe and welcoming space for all,” said Rhonda Jessup, CEO and Chief Librarian.

Mayor Roy expressed her deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the town’s commitment to combating hate and ensuring safety for all residents.

“We are committed to ongoing dialogue and action to combat antisemitism and ensure that every resident feels safe and supported in Whitby,” said Roy. “Acts of hate like this not only target specific individuals or groups but also seek to divide our community. We will not let that happen.”

Roy also addressed the town’s Jewish community directly, offering reassurance and solidarity. “To our Jewish community: please know that you are not alone. Whitby stands with you, and together, we will continue working to ensure that hate has no home in our town.”

This latest act of antisemitism follows a similarly troubling event last summer, when a large swastika was burned into the grass at Prince of Wales Park, another incident Mayor Roy described as an “abhorrent act of hate.”

The town of Whitby continues to take steps to address hate crimes and foster a community rooted in respect and inclusion. Law enforcement is actively investigating the recent vandalism, and officials are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

Whitby’s leaders and community members are united in their resolve to prevent incidents of hate and ensure that spaces like libraries remain safe and welcoming for all.
