BRAMPTON, July 2, 2026 — Canada Day celebrations in Brampton generated a significant increase in fireworks-related complaints this year, with the number of reports more than doubling compared with 2025 despite enhanced security measures and the city’s ongoing ban on personal fireworks.
According to the City of Brampton, residents made 713 service requests through the 311 system on July 1, including 45 complaints related to fireworks, accounting for approximately six per cent of all calls received that day. While only one penalty notice was issued under the city’s fireworks bylaw during the celebrations, municipal officials confirmed that several additional investigations remain underway and could result in further enforcement action.
The increase is notable when compared with previous years. Brampton recorded just 21 fireworks-related complaints during Canada Day celebrations in 2025, while approximately 105 complaints were reported in 2024. Although this year’s total remains well below the 2024 figure, it represents more than double the number received last year.
City officials had implemented extensive safety measures ahead of this year’s festivities, investing more than $200,000 in enhanced security and crowd management at Chinguacousy Park. The additional precautions followed serious public safety concerns during the 2025 Canada Day celebrations, when groups of individuals allegedly discharged fireworks within crowded areas and toward other attendees, creating dangerous conditions for families and visitors.
Brampton introduced a citywide ban on personal fireworks following ongoing safety concerns and repeated violations. In 2022, bylaw officers issued more than $38,000 in fines for fireworks-related offences, while Brampton Fire and Emergency Services responded to 20 fireworks-related fires, resulting in an estimated $20,000 in costs to taxpayers.
Since the prohibition was introduced, complaints during major celebrations have generally trended downward. However, this year’s increase suggests that public education, enforcement and compliance remain important challenges as the city continues its efforts to improve safety during large community events.
Municipal officials are encouraging residents to celebrate responsibly by attending professionally organized fireworks displays and complying with local bylaws designed to protect public safety and reduce the risk of fires and injuries.
