Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from next week’s PGA Championship due to what tournament organizers described as “a personal health matter with his family.”
The 55-year-old golfer had initially been listed among the 154-player field for the championship, which is scheduled to take place from May 14 to 17 at Aronimink Golf Club. However, officials later confirmed his withdrawal, with fellow American golfer Max Homa named as his replacement.
Mickelson has played only once so far in 2026 and has largely remained away from competition this season. He also missed last month’s Masters Tournament, explaining at the time that he would be stepping away from golf for an extended period while his family dealt with a private health issue.
Earlier this year, Mickelson withdrew from the opening four events of the LIV Golf season in Riyadh, Adelaide, Hong Kong and Singapore, again citing family health concerns.
He briefly returned to action in March at the LIV Golf event in South Africa, finishing tied for 48th place, before announcing another break from competitive golf in early April.
Mickelson remains one of golf’s most accomplished players, with six major championships to his name, including PGA Championship victories in 2005 and 2021. His 2021 win made history as he became the oldest golfer ever to win a major championship at age 50.
