ONTARIO — As the race toward the 2026 municipal elections begins, aspiring and returning candidates across the province are being offered new opportunities to build confidence and leadership skills through a series of virtual workshops hosted by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
With the nomination period officially open as of May 1 and running until August 21, interest in local politics is already gaining momentum. Municipalities across Ontario are preparing for a busy election season this October, with candidates stepping forward for roles ranging from mayor to councillor and school board trustee.
To support this wave of civic engagement, AMO is hosting targeted sessions designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the demands of public office. One of the key workshops, scheduled for May 6, is focused on urban Indigenous individuals considering a run for municipal council. The session aims to provide practical insights into campaign preparation, while building confidence among participants who may be entering the political arena for the first time.
The workshop will be led by experienced Indigenous leaders, including Melanie Pilon and William Morin, who will share their perspectives on leadership, community engagement and navigating the electoral process.
Another session on May 7 will conclude a broader leadership development series aimed at current and prospective municipal leaders. The workshop is designed to address the growing challenges faced by public officials, including increased political polarization, the pressures of social media and the importance of maintaining personal well-being while serving in public life.
Organizers say the initiative reflects a growing need to prepare leaders who can navigate complex community issues while maintaining transparency, resilience and authenticity. As local governments continue to play a critical role in shaping everyday life — from infrastructure and housing to public safety and community services — the importance of strong, informed leadership has never been greater.
With nominations now open and campaigns beginning to take shape, these workshops offer a timely resource for those considering stepping into public service, reinforcing the message that effective leadership starts with preparation, understanding and a commitment to community.
