Mark Carney Meets Global Leaders at European Summit in Yerevan

Ottawa — Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Armenia to participate in the European Political Community summit, where he is engaging with global leaders on key issues including security, political co-operation and economic development.

The summit, held in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, brings together leaders from across Europe and partner nations, including Ukraine, Turkey and Iceland. Canada’s participation marks a milestone, as it becomes the first non-European country to attend the forum since its creation following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Ahead of the summit, Carney met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, expressing appreciation for the invitation and highlighting the importance of collaboration at what he described as a “crucial time” for Europe and its shared values.

During the summit, Carney is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several key leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, discussions will centre on strengthening Ukraine’s defence efforts amid ongoing conflict, as well as expanding trade and investment opportunities between Canada and European partners.

Carney’s presence at the summit underscores Canada’s growing role in international security and economic co-operation, particularly as geopolitical tensions continue to reshape global alliances.
