Airlines in Canada and abroad are scaling back service as surging jet fuel prices create fresh pressure on the aviation industry.
The spike follows escalating conflict in the Middle East and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route. Industry observers say the rapid rise in fuel costs has created one of the most serious operating challenges airlines have faced in recent years.
Several carriers have already announced route suspensions, schedule reductions, or fleet adjustments.
Transat / Air Transat
The Montreal-based company says it will reduce capacity by six per cent.
That includes fewer flights on selected routes to Europe and the Caribbean, along with an extended suspension of service to Cuba until October.
Air Canada
Canada’s largest airline has suspended six routes across domestic, international, and transborder markets.
Domestic Routes
- Fort McMurray to Vancouver — suspended effective May 28, 2026
- Yellowknife to Toronto — suspended effective Aug. 30, 2026
International Route
- Guadalajara to Montreal — planned launch now suspended
Transborder Routes
- Salt Lake City to Toronto — temporary suspension effective June 30, 2026, with return planned in 2027
- John F. Kennedy International Airport to Toronto — temporary suspension effective June 1, 2026, resuming Oct. 25, 2026
- John F. Kennedy International Airport to Montreal — temporary suspension effective June 1, 2026, resuming Oct. 25, 2026
WestJet
The Calgary-based airline says it is consolidating flights on lower-demand routes and adjusting its summer schedule to improve efficiency.
Lufthansa
The European carrier plans to cancel 20,000 short-haul flights, aiming to save more than 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel.
Reported route cuts include:
- Frankfurt to Bydgoszcz
- Frankfurt to Rzeszów
- Frankfurt to Stavanger
What It Means for Travellers
Passengers may see higher fares, fewer direct flights, route changes, and tighter seat availability during peak travel periods.
Travellers are being encouraged to monitor bookings closely, confirm schedules before departure, and consider flexible travel options where possible.
As fuel markets remain volatile, more airlines could follow with additional cuts in the weeks ahead.
