Hundreds Stranded in Italy After Air India Cancels Diwali Flights Over Technical Glitch

Hundreds of passengers hoping to return home to India in time for Diwali were left stranded in Italy after Air India abruptly cancelled its Milan–Delhi flight (AI138) on Friday due to a technical issue with the aircraft.

The airline confirmed that the cancellation was prompted by “an extended technical requirement” on the plane originally scheduled to operate the flight, emphasizing that the decision was made to prioritize passenger and crew safety.

“All passengers have been provided hotel accommodations,” Air India said in a statement, adding that some arrangements had to be made outside the immediate airport vicinity due to limited availability.

Affected travelers were informed that they would be rebooked on alternate flights on or after October 20 — which coincides with the Diwali holiday — depending on seat availability with Air India and partner airlines.

One passenger, whose Schengen visa was set to expire on Monday, was given priority and rebooked on another airline’s flight departing Sunday to avoid visa complications.

The airline assured that it is offering all stranded passengers meals, accommodation, and necessary ground assistance until departure. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew,” the spokesperson said.

While Air India cited safety as its top concern, for many travelers hoping to celebrate Diwali with loved ones back home, the delay turned their long-awaited festive journey into an unexpected holiday ordeal.
