Wrong-Way Horror: 21-Year-Old Charged After Terrifying Dashcam Footage on Highway 401

Ontario Provincial Police have released dramatic dashcam video showing a wrong-way driver barreling down Highway 401 in Milton, narrowly avoiding what could have been a deadly head-on crash.

Police say a 21-year-old Toronto man is facing multiple charges after allegedly driving a dark-coloured Honda Civic eastbound in the westbound lanes near James Snow Parkway around 6 p.m. on Sept. 7.

In the footage shared on social media, oncoming vehicles can be seen swerving to avoid a collision as the car speeds toward them. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the driver sideswiped several vehicles before striking a light pole and fleeing the scene on foot.

Mississauga OPP officers arrested the suspect shortly afterward. He is now facing charges of dangerous driving, failing to remain at the scene, and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. Police are still investigating whether impairment was a factor and say additional charges may follow.

“This shocking video could have easily resulted in a fatal collision,” Schmidt said. “Thankfully, drivers were able to take evasive action and avoid a head-on crash.”

No injuries were reported in the incident, but OPP are urging drivers to remain alert and report dangerous behaviour immediately.
