Brampton Unveils Ambitious Sport Tourism Strategy to Boost Economy

Brampton’s City Council has officially endorsed the city’s first-ever Sport Tourism Strategy, signaling a significant move to establish Brampton as a premier destination for sport events across Ontario and Canada. This comprehensive roadmap builds upon the 2021 Brampton Tourism Strategy and aims to leverage the power of sport to enhance the local economy, engage communities, and inspire youth participation.

Developed in partnership with Sport Tourism Canada, Toa Consulting, and The Data Jungle, the new strategy outlines a clear vision, five key goals, and 66 actionable tactics. Brampton already has a strong foundation in sport tourism, generating over $20 million annually in economic impact and booking more than 25,000 hotel room nights through over 30 sporting events each year. The strategy seeks to significantly grow this momentum by:

  • Prioritizing 18 high-potential sports: While the specific list of 18 sports isn’t detailed, the strategy focuses on maximizing impact from key sporting disciplines.
  • Becoming Canada’s hub for culturally significant sport events: This goal reflects Brampton’s diverse population, aiming to host events that resonate with its multicultural communities, such as cricket and kabaddi.
  • Strengthening existing sport franchises: This includes fostering the growth and success of local professional teams like the Brampton Steelheads (Ontario Hockey League) and the Brampton Honey Badgers (Canadian Elite Basketball League).
  • Establishing Brampton as a provincial and national training and event hub: This involves enhancing facilities and capabilities to attract more high-level training and competitions.
  • Operationalizing a participant-first model: This emphasizes aligning city departments and partners to ensure a positive experience for all participants and measurable outcomes.

Research supporting the strategy involved extensive stakeholder workshops, venue analysis, and a sport tourism readiness assessment. Mayor Patrick Brown highlighted that the strategy reflects the city’s ambition to lead in sport hosting, emphasizing Brampton’s “world-class facilities, strong community engagement and one of the youngest and most diverse populations in the country.” He added that the strategy is an investment in the city’s economy, youth, and future as a major sport destination.

Councillor Navjit Kaur Brar, Chair of the Corporate Services Section, underscored the economic benefits, noting that sport tourism generates significant revenue, drives hotel stays, and supports small businesses without adding pressure to the property tax base. Regional Councillor Rowena Santos, Chair of the Community Services Section, pointed to the strategy’s focus on youth engagement, community pride, and health and wellness, emphasizing how it will open doors for new partnerships and participation across generations, celebrating sport in culturally meaningful and inclusive ways.
