Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet today with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as part of a high-stakes day of foreign policy discussions at the G7 summit in Alberta.
As the summit enters its final day, leaders are pushing forward on pressing international issues in the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump, who abruptly left the summit on Monday. Trump cited intensifying tensions in the Middle East for his early departure—missing the foreign policy sessions led by Carney.
Carney will first meet privately with Zelenskyy, who is also participating in a G7 working breakfast aimed at advancing diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Later in the day, Carney will host a bilateral meeting with Modi, who is attending sessions on global energy sovereignty alongside leaders from Brazil, South Africa, and Mexico.
Modi’s presence has sparked vocal demonstrations from Sikh separatist groups in Canada, following recent RCMP allegations linking Indian agents to a series of criminal activities on Canadian soil, including extortion and targeted killings.
The outcomes of these meetings are expected to shape Canada’s positioning on key international alliances and its approach to geopolitical stability heading into the second half of the year.
