City of Brampton and Zenobē Launch $4 Billion Zero-Emission Transit Partnership in Historic UK-Canada Agreement

The City of Brampton has announced a landmark $4 billion partnership with Zenobē, a leading UK-based fleet electrification and battery storage company, to fully convert Brampton Transit’s fleet to zero-emission electric buses — the largest transit electrification initiative in Canadian history.

The announcement was made in Ottawa, where Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and Zenobē executives joined UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to celebrate this milestone in international collaboration, sustainable infrastructure, and green investment.

Under the first phase of the 10-year agreement, Brampton’s diesel-powered buses will be gradually replaced with up to 1,000 battery electric buses (BEBs), transforming the city’s transit network and supporting over 40 million passenger trips annually. The full transition is expected to eliminate the vast majority of emissions from transit operations, which currently account for approximately 70% of the City’s corporate GHG emissions.

This public-private partnership is projected to generate 5,000 direct and indirect jobs across Canada and the UK and bring over $1 billion in foreign investment into Canada.

The partnership builds upon the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s previously announced commitment of up to $400 million to support Brampton Transit’s purchase of up to 450 zero-emission buses by 2027, accelerating the city’s bold climate goals.
