A now-defunct North York private school and its director have been fined a total of $410,000 after failing to pay nearly $185,000 in wages to 14 employees.
An investigation by the Ontario Ministry of Labour revealed that Ontario International College Inc., once located at 3550 Victoria Park Avenue, had ignored multiple orders to compensate its staff. Despite being directed in 2019 and again in 2020 to pay the outstanding wages, the college failed to comply or request a review.
As a result, the Ministry extended its order to the school’s director, Anchuan Jiang, holding him personally accountable. Both Jiang and the institution were taken to court, where the college was fined $270,000 and Jiang an additional $140,000 for non-compliance.
A 25% victim fine surcharge was also imposed—funds that go into a provincial fund to support victims of crime—bringing the total penalties even higher.
The Ontario International College is now listed as permanently closed, with its contact number no longer in service.
This case serves as a stark warning to employers across the province: wage violations can carry steep consequences—even long after a business shuts its doors.
