Indian Man Helped Smuggle Migrants Through Peace Arch Border, Court Hears

An Indian national has been sentenced to five months in a U.S. prison for his role in a human smuggling operation that brought eight Indian citizens across the Canada–U.S. border in late 2023.

According to the U.S. District Attorney’s office in Seattle, 27-year-old Rajat Rajat was involved in two separate smuggling incidents at the Peace Arch border crossing between British Columbia and Washington state. Surveillance footage captured five individuals jumping a fence near the Boundary Village Apartments in Blaine, Washington, just 400 metres from the crossing, on November 27, 2023. The group then fled into a waiting white minivan.

U.S. border officials intercepted the vehicle and arrested five Indian nationals along with a 68-year-old man from California who was driving. Three of the passengers told investigators that Rajat had orchestrated the crossing, providing instructions and coordinating their pick-up.

Further investigation revealed that Rajat had taken payments from the migrants and paid the driver to transport them from the border area. The following month, Rajat reportedly met with another group of three Indian nationals in Peace Arch Park and directed them to cross the border on foot into a waiting vehicle on the U.S. side. The car was stopped and searched by authorities, and the individuals inside confirmed they had agreed to pay Rajat for helping them enter the country illegally.

Authorities described Rajat as a “mid-level manager” in a broader smuggling ring that had been operating for an extended period. Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller stated that Rajat’s role included arranging flights, providing logistical guidance, and even fronting travel costs to assist his clients and co-conspirators. “We are committed to working with our law enforcement partners to stop the illegal border crossings that undermine U.S. security,” Miller said.

Prosecutors painted a picture of a well-organized, transnational criminal operation, with Rajat playing an essential part in its execution. He was arrested near the border and charged with conspiracy to bring in and transport non-citizens for profit.

U.S. District Judge Tana Lin sentenced Rajat to five months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. However, given his immigration status, he is expected to be deported after serving his sentence. Rajat had been living in California prior to his arrest.

Three others involved in the smuggling scheme have also been sentenced. Sushil Kumar, 36, received a six-month sentence in March. Bobby Joe Green, the van driver, was sentenced to four months. A fourth individual—a 20-year-old Indian woman in the U.S. on a student visa—is expected to face trial early next year for her alleged role in the operation.
